The A-10 Thunderbolt has a special ability called Damage Control. When equipped and triggered, it repairs a percentage of the damage delt to the airframe. There is a cool down period between uses. There are only three uses per life.
Veteran tips
The A-10 Thunderbolt is renowned for its exceptional durability, capable of surviving multiple direct hits. Its special ability, Damage Control, enables repairs without needing to fly through a repair pick up which further enhances its survivability. While its turn rate is good the A-10 Thunderbolt has weak engines, making climbing difficult and limiting its max speed making it not recommended for Air Superiority matches. The wide wing span of the A-10 can lead to terrain strikes, especially in tight spaces. If a terrain strike should happen, it is more than likely that the low engine power will not allow the aircraft to recover from the stall. While its rockets are powerful, they are limited in quantity and should be enough to defeat two opponents if used correctly. Even if the rockets are classified as light they are very slow and it is suggested to save rockets for head-on attacks, or attacks upon an opponent's tail. The cannon have the longest spin-up time but also delivers high armor-piercing rounds and high damage. Pilots are recommended to pre-spin the cannon to maximize damage output and take advantage as much as possible of the auto aim mechanic. With experience in guessing the lead a considerable amount of damage can be done way before the cannon reticle shows up. A good estimate when firing without the cannon lead reticle is to fire with the cannons at a distance of 2/5 between the enemy aircraft and the rocket aim indicator. There is a wide separation between the cannon aim reticle and the rocket aim reticle and the cannon reticle cannot be used to lead the rocket fire. It is suggested to save the heat-seeking missiles for finishing shots as they are short ranged and low damage. Given its good maneuverability and damage but slow speed it is suggested to use the A-10 for dog fights only.
Trivia
- In-game, the A-10 Thunderbolt is equipped with what appears to be six, LAU-10/A rocket pods, equipped with 24x 5-inch (127mm) Zuni Rockets.
- The GAU-8 Avenger cannon, when fired, produces a recoil force that is slightly greater than the output produced by one of the two engines of the A-10 Thunderbolt.
